Reflexive verbs describe an action the subject performs on itself — e.g. lavar-se (to wash oneself). They are marked with a reflexive pronoun that matches the subject.

Common Reflexive Verbs
  • chamar-se – to be called (name)
  • vestir-se – to get dressed
  • deitar-se – to lie down / go to bed
  • sentar-se – to sit down
  • lembrar-se (de) – to remember
Tip: In European Portuguese, the reflexive pronoun usually attaches after the verb with a hyphen in statements (levanto-me), but moves before the verb after certain words like não, question words, and conjunctions: não me levanto.
